How to install a spin-on filter correctly

Most spin-on filter failures in service start at installation: a double gasket, a dry seal or a can tightened with a wrench. These steps avoid them.

Safety first

Stop the engine, apply the parking brake and lower attachments to the ground. Let the engine and fluids cool before you touch a filter: oil, fuel and hydraulic fluid can be hot enough to burn. On hydraulic circuits, relieve system pressure as the operator's manual describes before loosening anything. Wear gloves and eye protection.

Before you start

Check that the new filter matches the old one: thread, gasket size, height, diameter and, where fitted, the bypass valve setting. Have clean fluid of the right type and a drain pan ready.

Installation steps

  1. Remove the old filter and check that its gasket came off with it. A second gasket left on the head is the most common cause of a sudden leak.
  2. Wipe the sealing face on the filter head clean.
  3. Prefill the new filter only where the manual allows it. Engine oil filters mounted upright are often prefilled; many fuel systems must not be prefilled because unfiltered fuel would reach the clean side.
  4. Coat the new gasket with a thin film of clean fluid of the same type the filter will carry.
  5. Screw the filter on by hand until the gasket touches the head, then tighten by the additional turn printed on the filter or given in the manual. Do not tighten with a filter wrench; wrenches are for removal.
  6. Start the machine, check for leaks around the gasket and check the fluid level. Top up as needed.
  7. On fuel systems, bleed air as the manual describes before running under load.

Replacing an element instead

For cartridge housings, replace the O-rings supplied with the element, clean the bowl and tighten the cover to the torque the manual gives.

Disposal

Drain the used filter and dispose of it and the fluid according to local rules.
